"People make choices each and everyday regarding their likes and dislikes, We choose music, speakers, food, clothing, books, churches, even our communities we live in by our likes and dislikes. Three years ago when Pastor approached me about the position of Praise and Worship Director, I had NO idea of what that position meant--or involved. Oh how God has changed and worked on me over those three years.
First Church is a fellowship of believers from various backgrounds with a wide variety of likes-and dislikes. I made the decision three years ago---We are a blended fellowship, so we must offer blended music. I still believe that. If we go radical new-age music, we will not be ministering to the 50 plus age group. If we go traditional hymns, we will not be ministering to the 50 and under age group. We must minister to ALL the family. We are a blended church family, so we must offer a blended music format. I love the tradition and the message of the old hymns, but I also love the uplifting praise message from modern songs-choruses. I would also take the position that most people are in agreement with that position. As the Lord and I put the Sunday AM music format together, I strive to follow Him and His leading, but also to blend traditional music with contempoary music. When the praise and worship team leaves the platform each Sunday AM, I believe it is our responsibility to have been able to lead the church family into the presence of the Lord through a worship time that they will be remembering throughout the week to come. |
